Most concise and precise book on Indian Philosophy

By A Customer

1) the simplest feature of this book is: it's the particular texts of such a lot of nice works like Vedas, Upanishads, Gita etc. For this one reason itself, it's a requirement have book, where else can you get such a concise and precise translations of all the main Indian texts all in one place.

2) It deals extensively not solely with Upanishads and different six Darshanas however conjointly includes Arth Shastra by Kautilya(Chanakya), the famous Indian economist/politician (contemporary to Alexander). It conjointly included Bhagvat Gita and therefore the famous Karma Yoga, collectively would expect in any Indian philosophy book!

3) It summarizes the key-features of all the seemingly totally different Indian philosophies Buddhism/Jainism/Charvaka/Hinduism terribly succintly within the initial chapter. I significantly liked the seven key similarities of Indian thought on page xxiii from the final introduction.

4) Another attention-grabbing half is on page xxx where the authors argue why one ought to undertake the study of Indian philosophy and the way ought to it's taken. It takes historical, political and philosophical stand-points. Again, a requirement read!

4) One flaw of the book is that they need quite assumed whole-heartedly with the Aryan Invasion Theory stating that Aryans came from outside India and settled in India around 2000 bc. However, this theory is seriously debated by several up to date students like Prof Edwin Bryant (PhD from Columbia, currently teaching at Rutgers), Prof Klaus Klostermaier (author of the many Hinduism books, one amongst that was assigned reading during this category too, retired from Univ of Manitoba, Canada, currently teaching at Oxford, UK), Prof Subhash Kak etc. a number of these students maintain that Aryans were native inhabitants of India who visited different components of the planet, ranging from India. But, it's still an enormous controvery till solid evidences are found.

5) different downside is: on page xxix, it's mentioned that the folks from the varna, Shudra (sudra), aren't religiously initiated Hindus and that they dont got to bear the four Aashrams (stages) of the human-life. this is often conjointly not agreeable statement because the same Manu-Smriti that has stated this has conjointly stated elsewhere, that one becomes Dvija(twice born) of the primary there varnas, solely by character and not simply by birth alone. It prescribes the mobility between totally different varnas.
