Think twice before ordering the Mass Market publication

I did a hunt for ''The Story of Philosophy'' and solely the Mass Market version of this book came up (ISBN 0-671-73916-6) that I ordered. The print was therefore unreadable due, a minimum of to my copy, of a really serious, black, flared type-setting. There was no probability of reading the book with any enjoyment....lo and behold I notice a second book (ISBN 0-671-69500-2) that is excellently type-set, and extremely readable. despite the fact that this second book format is twice the value of the cheaply done Mass Market format, it's eminently worthwhile. I create these comments, so as to save lots of some poor soul from the trouble I went through to urge a readable copy of this paramount book.

A new interest in philosophy

I loved this book!! It taught me such a lot concerning philosophy. I wonder, though, what percentage coaching programs can devote the time necessary for residents to form a dent within the material. Few programs teach history of psychiatry, fewer, philosophy. Concise, entertaining, and sensible reading!

I am a philosophy major turned law student. it's been nearly 3 years since my last philosophy category, and that i am quite slightly rusty on what I learned in faculty in my philosophy categories.

This book was fabulous! Using the Potter series as a springboard, Baggett's book explores disparate philosophical topics in a very lucid, precise, and fascinating manner. The book is separated into sixteen short essays that average concerning 7-10 pages. every essay covers a special philosophical topic and illustrates its purpose by using examples from the Potter series. The essays are remarkably palatable and simple to read--I found that I might get pleasure from an essay before bed or on a brief automobile trip.

Each essay is entertaining and academic. wish to grasp concerning Aristotilean ethics? browse Steve Patterson's essay on Ambition. There are essays covering feminism, racial discrimination, and morality.

The best there's, not the most effective there might be

By obtaining the second edition of the Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy i think to own achieved the most effective dictionary of this type. however after I say "the best" I mean "the best there is" and not "the best there might be", since, except for the big and helpful info offered by this work, that is in no manner comparable with others of constant kind that I actually have scan or consulted, there are bound lacks that bothered me. In my opinion, there are 3 critics that may be hostile the Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy. the primary one is that the preponderance of the knowledge regarding trendy Philosophy and Logic, that isn't justified by the importance of the ideas or authors concerned. for instance, the article regarding the idea of "possible worlds" (which has extremely been given enough importance solely within the last 1/2 the XXth century) is longer than the article regarding Zeno's paradoxes. Also, minor philosophers and logicians of the XXth century are presented in distinct articles, whereas the presocratics (Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Zeno of Elea, Anaxagoras etc.) are all presented in one article and a few of them did not even get their name mentioned. The second critic is analogous to the primary one, however it considerations a precise a part of non-modern Philosophy: the scholastic (medieval) one. the colleges, authors, works and ideas of this age are presented partially or are not presented in the slightest degree. Philosophy With Some POW! WHAM! ZAP!

A smart, Solid, Readable, Beautiful, Understandable Translation

Most concise and precise book on Indian Philosophy

a conflict of interest, however hear me out!

As the editor of this book, i am reluctant to jot down a review of it--but clearly not reluctant enough!

I've edited half dozen of those books, and that i am most happy with this one. i believe the essays manage to be entertaining, to supply broad coverage of divergent areas of philosophy, and conjointly demonstrate love of the show--all things the series arrange to capture in every of its books.

Almost all contributors have advanced degrees in philosophy. So, contra one disgruntled reviewer, these don't seem to be 'high school' kind essays. Obviously, this genre of book isn't for everybody. Some regard the popularization of philosophy as a disservice to the discipline. i'm clearly not somebody who buys this read. i believe philosophy within the academy has become too insulated for the remainder of the world--so insulated, in fact, that the majority individuals haven't any plan what philosophy is or why its price pursuing. thirty Rock and Philosophy tries to produce a bridge into philosophy through widespread culture--and i believe we have a tendency to do it quite well. (Of course, if I did not, i would not have place my name on the book, and therefore the book wouldn't have return out!).

I hope I will not be suspected of overstating the virtues of this book after I say that this can be the only finest philosophy anthology that I've ever encountered--and, believe me, I've seen my fair proportion of them.
